So that they may have life

The University was founded as Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland University College in 1921. The site for the University was donated by a local businessman, Thomas Fielding Johnson, in order to create a living memorial for all local people who made sacrifices during the First World War. This is reflected in the University's motto Ut vitam habeant – 'so that they may have life'.

Our award-winning David Wilson Library provides state-of-the art services. Keeping fit at University of Leicester

Whether you’re looking to stay fit and have fun, or are an elite athlete, our sports facilities will provide everything you need. Following a £10 million expansion programme, we have two state-of-the-art sports centres – both are filled with modern equipment so you can keep fit, healthy or unwind after a long day.

The Students’ Union is the social hub of the campus. It’s a fully-independent organisation and can help you get to grips with university life. It’s also the perfect place to meet for coffee, volunteer and relax.

Oadby Student Village is exclusively for undergraduate students with a mix of converted Edwardian houses and purpose-built accommodation blocks.The Village Hub is at the heart of our Oadby Student Village and is where many of our events in halls take place.
